Student Counseling Services Caring for Your Advanced Development
The counselling department is headed effectively by a team of experienced counsellors who are dedicated to providing services and programmes designed and structured in achieving mental and emotional well-being in a safe and conducive learning environment. Our councillors listen to the students' concerns and support them to make informed and wise choices. Counselling is a confidential educational human communicative and interactive process.
The school counselling services are as follow,
(i) To promote developmental interpersonal skills in students to build positive relationships with peers, teachers, parents and community.
(ii) To help students to recognise their individual strength and sense of responsibility to cope in the 21st century challenges.
(iii) To assist students to make career decisions and set goals for themselves.
(iv) To help reduce youth negative behavioural tendencies by providing positive interventions.
(v) To conduct counselling with care and professional confidentiality.
The focus of the school is to provide excellent education. Very often the learner's behaviour displays a lack of understanding of this. It is, however the task of the school educator to manage an orderly and conducive atmosphere within the framework of the school rules and regulations in order to create a culture of positive behaviour with the emphasis on the development of self-discipline, independence and maturity among the students.
Riam Road Secondary School advocates a firm, strict, consistent and positive discipline management with the collaborative help and guidance from the established disciplinary board and counselling department.
The school's codes of conduct formulated to help the students are as follows:
(i) To serve as a very useful disciplinary and behavioural management instrument to encourage esprit de corps and group responsibility. This will eventually help to reduce group pressure and motivate them to channel their behaviour in the positive direction.
(ii) The enforcement of good discipline will contribute to the improvement in learning-an orderly and well - disciplined classroom is a prerequisite for effective learning. The students will co-operate better and a harmonious atmosphere will be generated in the school. Even the police Chief of Miri praised the school for its strict discipline. No discipline, no learning and good discipline is the key to success.
(iii) There are varied constructive, positive, recovery strategies implemented in the school in order to safeguard the conducive, safe and healthy learning environment created for all.
(iv) The school's 6 core values namely respect, integrity, empathy, excellence, gratitude and diligence are designed to serve as guiding principles in the discipline management of the 21st century learning reformation of the school.
